Pressure Redistribution
Pressure redistribution is the process of reducing and redistributing concentrated pressure away from vulnerable areas of the body to help protect tissue integrity, improve blood flow, and reduce the risk of pressure injury formation or progression. Instead of allowing excessive force to remain focused on isolated bony prominences such as the sacrum, heels, hips, or shoulders, a pressure redistribution surface spreads body weight more evenly across a larger contact area.
For patients with Stage III, Stage IV, and unstageable pressure injuries, effective pressure redistribution is essential because prolonged localized pressure can impair circulation, damage tissue, and delay wound healing.
Pro-Daptive™ SensorCell™ achieves advanced pressure redistribution through its adaptive floatation technology and independently responsive SensorCell™ design. The system continuously responds to the patient’s body shape, positioning, movement, and pressure profile in real time. This individualized response allows the surface to dynamically adjust support characteristics across different areas of the body rather than relying on fixed or generalized therapy settings.
By continuously adapting to the patient, Pro-Daptive™ helps:
Reduce peak interface pressures
Offload vulnerable anatomical areas
Improve immersion and envelopment
Minimize shear and friction forces
Support tissue perfusion and microcirculation
Enhance comfort and stability
Maintain consistent therapeutic support as patient conditions change
Compared to traditional alternating pressure therapy, Pro-Daptive™ provides a fundamentally different approach to pressure management. Alternating pressure systems typically work by cyclically inflating and deflating air cells in predetermined patterns to periodically shift pressure from one area of the body to another. While this can help reduce prolonged pressure exposure, therapy settings are often preset and based primarily on patient weight rather than individualized anatomical or clinical needs.
In contrast, Pro-Daptive™ continuously adapts in real time to the patient’s specific pressure redistribution requirements without relying solely on repetitive inflation cycles. This allows for more personalized support, improved stability, and a more consistent therapeutic environment.
Compared to Air Fluidized Therapy (AFT), Pro-Daptive™ shares the benefits of immersion, envelopment, and floatation that help distribute pressure across a larger surface area. However, traditional AFT systems primarily provide generalized low-pressure support and do not offer targeted or adaptive pressure redistribution capabilities.
Pro-Daptive™ extends beyond conventional AFT by combining immersion and floatation therapy with dynamic, individualized pressure management. This enables the system to continuously respond to changing patient conditions and localized pressure risks, providing a more responsive therapeutic surface for advanced pressure injury prevention and treatment.
